Tell us a bit more about your business and what inspired you to start it?
As they say, necessity is the mother of invention. During a wild brooch-wearing phase of mine a few years back, I realised the dearth of good brooches in the local as well as online market. I got myself a couple from international portals like Etsy, but I was so not ready to pay more for shipping than for the actual product! That’s when I decided to make my own brooches out of fabrics & trims and slowly the results of my efforts turned into my first ever Howrah Bridge products!!!
Today, Howrah Bridge is a brand that so many women from different places all over the world coming from different backgrounds & leading different lifestyles all like & want to wear. These women all find confidence & comfort in our clothes that are contemporary but have their roots in tradition.
All the love & support I get from wonderful women like you who think my toddler of a brand is worth sharing about with other people – yes, that’s what keeps me going!
I officially left my 9 to 5 job with a leading retail company and launched Howrah Bridge in all its glory in 2012. Now, two years down the line, I can’t even imagine my business without its social media aspects! Coming from a fashion-wise conservative city like Kolkata, where people take time to accept new concepts & like to stick to typical representations of tradition, I hardly had instant loyalists or a huge client base for my contemporary & innovative products. But surprisingly, the fan following of the brand on the Howrah Bridge Facebook page more than made up for it! Even after all this time, I still marvel at how easily women from all parts of the globe fall in love with my creations by just looking at pictures and place orders with the same excitement & eagerness as local customers who can touch & feel whatever they are buying.
Of course, being a blogger had its own advantages too! In my 4 years of blogging, I’m fortunate to have created bonds of friendship with so many lovely souls from around the world. And the encouragement & love from all of them is something I cherish passionately! Not to mention the fact that some of these women are hardcore Howrah Bridge loyalists now and they spread the love by sharing about their hauls on their blogs, thus taking the brand all over the place!
We, bloggers, love our art of mixing & matching! Hence, a few versatile pieces in our closet are always more precious to us than the others. Some such items from my wardrobe would be my white blouses/shirts, my collection of necklaces, a Howrah Bridge floral jacket, a pair of hand-painted wedges and my wayfarers & aviators
What are some of your favorite shopping places?
Being the shopaholic that I am, the research about any new place I go to begins with finding out about its markets or shopping destinations!
In India, my favorite places to shop would be Colaba Causeway in Mumbai, Janpath in Delhi, New Market & BK Market in Kolkata, Forever 21, Vero Moda, Accessorize and Zara.
But if I have to choose one place, then Bangkok wins hands down – with all it’s malls, flea markets & night markets – a shoppers paradise! *sigh*

The most star-struck moment for my brand was when one of my clients, Arts Journalist Deepika Shetty, draped a Howrah Bridge saree for interviewing the music maestro AR Rahman in Singapore. Seeing my creation in the same frame as the legend made my heart skip several beats and when Deepika’s note accompanying the picture said that Rahman had complimented her saree, well, my joy knew no bounds! You can visit the Facebook page here- https://www.facebook.com/howrahbridgebyadg And for ordering the fabulous Howrah Bridge creations email Anupriya at - email@example.com
I started off the year in a Howrah Bridge creation and its kind of been my lucky charm too:-)
